Feedback:

Hello,

I would like to use the NCBO annotator API to encode clinical records for a thesis project. Is the NCBO annotator API HIPPA compliant or are there ways to use the NCBO annotator in a HIPPA compliant way?

Thanks,

John Graybeal-2
Hello Jack,

Thank you for your inquiry. Unfortunately, the annotator is not HIPAA compliant.

We recommend that people who need to work with clinical data set up an appropriately secure installation of BioPortal, which we distribute as OntoPortal. It is available as a Virtual Appliance, or an Amazon Machine Instance for remote use (but the AMI option would likely not serve you either). You would download the OntoPortal software, download the ontologies you need to work with (possibly including the installation of UMLS ontologies using umls2rdf), and then isolate your system from access by anyone who does not have the appropriate approvals. Instructions for all steps but the last are available at the administration documentation link below.

Instructions for downloading the OntoPortal Virtual Appliance and getting a license are at https://ontoportal.github.io/administration/. [hidden email] if you have any trouble.
